J-2 Visa

The J2 visa is a nonimmigrant visa which allows the dependants (spouses and unmarried children under 21) of J-1 student visa holders to enter into the U.S.

How to Apply

  • The application procedure is the same as the J-1. The Form DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility, which is sent to the J-1 covers dependents .
  • If the spouse and/or children apply for visas at a later date, a duplicate Form DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility, must be obtained from the sponsor and furnished together with a copy of principal applicant's J-1 visa

Documents Required for J2 Visa    

The documents required for J-2 visa are:

Completed USCIS Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, and signature card (available at OIE) .

Check or money order in the amount of $100 made payable to the USCIS .

Photocopy of USCIS Form I-94 (front and back) of J-1 (student or scholar) .

Photocopy of USCIS Form I-94 (front and back) of J-2 (dependent) .

Photocopy of current Form DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility .

Cover letter .

Photocopy of first three pages in passport (clear copy of passport and/or visa photo required) .

Two photos with a white background taken no earlier than 30 days before submission to the USCIS .

Duration of J2 Visa

You may in the U.S. as long as the principal J-1 visa holder has valid status. You lose your status once the principal J-1 visa holder loses status.

Limitations

On J-2 visa, you are:

  • Dependent on the status of the principal J-1 visa holder .
  • Able to apply for a work permit only after your arrival in the U.S.
